Children's Program

While self-defense is important, Kwon's Champion School designed its children's programs to instill and cultivate the following values:

  • Listening better to parents
  • Learning the concentration and patience that will enable them to study better in school
  • Strengthening leadership skills as well as friendships
  • Making good decisions as well as gaining responsibility, confidence, and self-discipline

Tomorrow's leaders are built today. They develop friendship and camaraderie in a cooperative and safe environment while coming to understand the value of teamwork. We believe that conflict resolution and how to handle stressful situations is best taught early in life. Achievement is a skill we are committed to teaching, and students of Kwon's Champion School learn that striving for excellence is a way of life.

Hwar Do training strengthens and develops the student's body. Each child learns the necessity and benefits of respect for self and others. At our school, we strive to develop in our students the desire and capability to study harder in school as well as to be more attentive and responsive to parents.

Hwar Do teaches students to always strive for excellence. A positive attitude grounded by strong moral values is of prime importance. Such children are better able to avoid and resist drugs, negative peer pressure, and gangs. The children's programs at Kwon's Champion School implement the ability to help your child reach his or her highest potential

"Since beginning his Hwar Do training in September 2005, my son, Jason, has transformed from an excessively shy and insecure boy into a confident, patient, and stronger individual. Not only has his emotional strength improved but also his physical strength and balance have improved tremendously. Grandmaster Kwon has taught Jason focus which has been his greatest issue thus far. I never thought he would reach this stage of maturity as quickly as he has. This past school year Jason's teacher noticed his focus increased during class and his thirst for knowledge grows every day. I believe he will grow up to be a fine young man."

*** Recently, Jason was awarded the 2011 Liberty Middle School Faculty Award for demonstrating the highest qualities of leadership, character, and academic achievement.

"Our son, Christian Artz, has been attending your school for just over two years. He has recently been awarded his Black Belt and we are very proud of him. After attending his first few classes we began to notice changes in our son. He was more polite and well mannered and began to show greater self-control and self-confidence. Over the course of the last two years we have witnessed a great transformation in Christian. Kwon's Champion School has provided our son not only increased physical ability but also tremendous mental focus and control which has helped Christian become a much better student. The instruction and leadership provided by your school has helped reinforce what we are teaching Christian at home. Thank you very much for providing such a balanced discipline for our son! "

Teaching Excellence

Kwon's Champion Schools comprise highly-experienced instructors chosen for their excellence of training and outstanding achievements. They are role models in society who are diligent in their own training. All instructor candidates must first undergo a specialized training course in the art and science of teaching and must pass a rigorous examination. Only then can they be certified as an instructor of Hwar Do.

Our teachers strive to provide a safe and comfortable environment in which students can learn the Right Way of martial arts.

“I drive 1 hour to learn from Grandmaster Kwon. Grandmaster Kwon is one of the greatest people I have ever met. I am a physician working in Washington D.C., and I have been studying all my life. I have finished schooling in college, medical school, and I am currently in my fifth year of a six year surgical residency program at Georgetown University Medical Center. I have come across and studied under hundreds of teachers, professors, and doctors throughout the years, and I can honestly state that Grandmaster H.Y. Kwon is the best teacher and mentor I have ever met. “

“Having been active, but never highly ranked, in the martial arts as a younger man I knew enough to be able to judge the kind of program and instructor I wanted. H.Y. Kwon is a 10th Degree Black Belt Grandmaster and founder of the Hwar Do style and he teaches every class personally. In fact, he also holds 8th degree rank and above in several well-recognized styles of martial arts. He is also very good with children and the elderly, offering special attention and age-appropriate expectations for both as well as unfailing good manners, respect and support. His large team of black belt instructors reflects this same ethic and includes several women and people my own age. If you are looking for a structured exercise program that is friendly, engaging, and more challenging each month this school might just be right for you.”

Davina Gabriela,
3rd degree black belt

“ My name is Davina Gabriela. Hwar Do has been an incredible influence in my life and the life of my son. We have been in Hwar Do for over 6 years and are 2nd degree black belts. Hwar Do is so very much more than martial arts; Hwar Do is now a way of life for us; it is a way of great strength and fighting ability while at the same time Hwar Do is also a way of inner peace and tranquility.

Grandmaster Kwon is an incredible teacher and instructor. We are so privileged to be able to learn directly from Grandmaster Kwon. He is a man of great honor, great strength, great wisdom, and unsurpassed fighting skills. He is aware of and encourages each student.

Hwar Do has made me stronger of body, mind, and spirit. Hwar Do has given me a greater sense of confidence and increased my concentration; it has given me inner strength, peace, calmness, and tranquility. "

Master Brian Flanagan, Ph.D
6th Degree Black Belt

"Grandmaster Kwon is the epitome of everything a martial arts grandmaster should be."

“Many people feel that martial arts is mostly about training the body, but it is also about training the mind. My name is Brian Flanagan and I have been studying Hwar Do under Grandmaster Kwon for 15 years. I have become a 5th degree black belt along with my wife, Laurie, who has become a 2nd degree black belt. The discipline, concentration and mental strength that I have learned from studying Hwar Do I know will last my entire life and affect everything I do.

I began working on my PhD in Electrical Engineering at about the same time I started studying Hwar Do. I was also working full time and I was told by many people that I would never be able to finish my degree without leaving my job, possibly for up to two years. I couldn't afford to be without an income for anywhere near that amount of time, but I was determined to get my degree.

Grandmaster Kwon taught me the mental disciple and determination that I needed to continue in my studies. I spent 8-10 hours at my regular job and typically worked another 6 or more hours on my studies almost every day. There were many times that I wanted to quit, but the strength I'd learned from Grandmaster Kwon allowed me to keep going. It took a very long time, but I finally received my PhD in May of 2000.

Looking back on it, I am sometimes amazed that I was able to keep up the necessary focus and determination for that long. My increased mental strength has improved other aspects of my life as well including multiple promotions at work and a much happier personal life. I know now that there is nothing I cannot accomplish if I set my mind to it.

To me, Grandmaster Kwon is the epitome of everything a martial arts grandmaster should be. His skill at martial arts is of course unrivaled, but he is also a very gentle man. He truly cares about his students' physical and mental well-being and always stresses how the mental discipline we learn from Hwar Do training can improve all aspects of our lives. He teaches us to always set a good example, to be courteous to everyone we meet and to help others whenever we can. He himself follows these principles without fail. In addition to the hundreds of students he has personally taught, he has organized charity events on numerous occasions, raising thousands of dollars for needy children."

“I am incredibly pleased to have been studying this combination martial art for the past sixteen years. I feel very lucky to have found a grandmaster who holds such high degrees in so many martial arts. Grandmaster Kwon's ability to intelligently blend martial art styles, as well as his ability to communicate this knowledge, yields an effective martial art that continues to help me grow and improve. My fellow students and I enjoy our training immensely. I couldn't be happier with my Hwar Do training.”

"Before joining Hwar Do, I studied Grandmaster Kwon's background and achievements. Needless to say, I never had doubt about his skills and knowledge of the martial arts. However, his patient and methodical style of teaching is what impressed me. He constantly provides positive feedback and motivates us to try harder. After taking his classes, I am able to accomplish tasks more efficiently in work."
